In The Beginning...

These are a few snapshots of my garden as at 5 January 2012, when this Garden Diary started:
Rose
Rose bush: lost most leaves at the lower part; flowering quite happily at a few tips.
A rose cutting taken about a week ago.
A rose cutting taken 3 days ago.
Frangipani
Frangipani: continues flowering since this spring.
I am also growing some seedlings of frangipani. These are about one month old.
A slow-growing frangipani seedling. It seems to have different shaped leaves, being more roundy rather  than pointy. It will be interesting to see how/whether it will be different when they are all bigger.
Geranium

There are quite a few of them around.
Dark-pink geranium given by a relative, flowering the first time in this bed.
The one next to it is from some parent plant and seems to be growing new leaves.
One grown from cutting is now producing its first set of flowers.

In the SW corner of the garden, there are three geraniums all looking slightly different. Apart from leaf shapes, their flowers are red, light-pink and orange. The orange one is an ivy type, and is flowering the first time since I got it two months ago.
Bromeliad
Two types of bromeliad in my garden. One has had a few young plants and the other was here when I moved in last October. They are not looking especially nice at the moment. I am trying to give them water as required to polish their look.
I haven't managed to find their variety names, so if you know them I would appreciate some help.

Callistemon (Bottle Brush)
Two small bottle brush bushes in the front garden. One is flowering again after the early November pruning.
Callistemon flower buds. Each of the round buds will flower like the previous photo in a couple of days.
Turf
This garden has an okay lawn. There are a few bare patches. One is being re-generated at the moment.

Amaryllis (or Hippeastrum)
The flowering photos are actually from two months ago. The current status is 50+ seedlings and plants with no more flowers for the year.

Germinating in water. The first batch I've ever tried, just after the seeds were harvested. The germination rate was 100%! It takes one month to grow to this size (these are the slower ones).
Other seedlings sowed at the same time, also germinated in water. They were moved into potting mix after the first leaf is big enough to handle.

  1. Nice garden! What do you use when watering the garden? Do you use water or fertilizer?

  2. Thanks Chris. I don't use much fertiliser at this stage as many plants are still too young.

  3. Do you use normal water or paramagnetic water?

  4. Never heard of paramagnetic water :p
I use rain water from our water tank mostly. :)

  5. Do you think that the second Bromeliad photo is of Alcantarea imperialis?

  6. Hey Chris. I just looked up and it seems it could be what you suggested, but I have never grown any bromeliads before. All the images I found on the internet seem to have a wider shape, unlike mine more tube-like. Do you grow any of them?
